PRESENTATION STUDIO BRIEF 3 IDEAS

To get the content needed for this brief i needed to see what I have learnt and answer the questions below.

What have you learned and what do you want to learn?
  • not just about the outcome, the design process is very useful
  • failure is ok, you can learn from it
  • asking for help is not a bad thing, it is very useful
  • broader range of research is needed
  • peers can help just as much as tutors can
  • new skills - letterpress, screenprint
What mistakes have you made and how have you learned from them?
  • missing crits - they impact heavily on my design
  • not experimenting enough
  • organisational skills need improvement
  • leaving things to the last minute
  • making rationales too late into the project, make them earlier
How will this affect your future development?
  • dont get the feedback that is needed
  • thus making the project harder for myself
What are your strengths and how have you / will you develop them further?
  • learning new skills
  • visual researching and sourcing materials
  • idea generation
  • exploring approaches
What are your weaknesses and how do you intend to address them?
  • public speaking
  • not blogging after the sessions i need to
  • making informed design decisions with purpose and sticking to them
  • time management skills - work harder to make it better
What have you enjoyed and why?
  • enjoyed all the inductions that were provided mainly the hand printing one
What have you disliked and why? How does this affect your ambitions?
  • not being able to fully utilise InDesign as I didnt pick it up as quick as others did
  • blogging the amount that is needed and consistently
What did you want to get from the year? Have you achieved this?
  • new skills to aid my work
  • yes i have gained many more skills but i think there is always more to learn
What have you discovered that you werent expecting?
  • research doesn't just have to come from the internet, it can come to you when you aren't even looking for it
I am going to include the most important and the most relevant from each of the points in my powerpoint.

SELF BRANDING STUDIO BRIEF 2 APPLICATIONS

https://leaharatcliffe.wixsite.com/thetopdogs
WEBSITE
Above is the link to the website that I created, I thought it was best for me to create a website as companies spend millions on creating brochures and distributing them, by having a website it completely skips all of that out, clients can find out about you and the work you do from the comfort of their office or home without being ambushed in the street with someone handing out flyers to you when you are trying to get somewhere. I also believe more and more people are using the internet every day and 90% of those people have either purchased something or contacted a company online in the last 12 months. Thus showing that if you do not have a website you most definitely would be missing out.

PENS I then had some time to look at producing something that would be nice and easy for each of us to leave something behind after seeing a client - I had the idea of pens. Something that is useful and every time a client used them they would be reminded of us. I was going to just produce one but then I thought I would do one for each of us as individuals as for a project we may just want one of us on the job and the client only wants to be reminded of the one Top Dog they are going to use.

BUSINESS CARDS
I think creating our business cards all separately was a good idea because it puts across our own personal side to the project and makes us all unique. I think the business card is a necessity for a company as it is nicer to leave something with a client rather than just sending them an email after to remind them who you are - the business card is more personal.

The feedback from our presentation was that it was a different view to the brief, everyone liked the playful and fun side to the brief which came across strongly. We received a lot of laughs from our peers when we were presenting the chosen dog types. However we were told that our design work could have more development. I agree with this and I also think that we struggled to work as a group because when we first met to discuss and show the initial ideas that they were all different and we needed to work out a way to bring our ideas into one company that didn't look different in all the aspects. I really enjoyed this brief thought, I had a lot of fun with it.

SELF BRANDING STUDIO BRIEF 2 DESIGN

TOP DOGS

3 unique graphic designers working together to fulfil our clients needs. Looking at each of us as individuals we then picked our dogs -

DINA SCHOFIELD YORKSHIRE TERRIER

We chose Dina to be a Yorkshire terrier as she is from Burnley which is in the North so she is a Yorkshire lass.

 LEAH RATCLIFFE (ME) CHIHUAHUA

Kitty and Dina chose me to be a Chihuahua as I am energetic and small.

KITTY EDWARDS AFGHAN HOUND

Kitty is elegant and trustworthy with long brown hair much like an afghan hound.

This is our first pay off and name idea that we came up with :

I then focused on my designs and what I could produce that would help my group. I wanted to focus on 3 things that were The business card for myself, pen designs and creating a website - which took up most of my time on this project.

For my business card I started looking at innovative ways that people make their business cards different but when I looked at our project as a whole I wanted my business card and the others cards to all link in with the website design so I thought the best thing to do was to keep the designs simple. I looked at designing my own version of myself as a Chihuahua but as sort of feisty and small one. To get the small aspect of the dog I wanted to just make an illustration of its face and to make it look feisty I made the expression look a little angry.

I then used my illustration to make a business card, I repeated my illustration multiple times and make it a bit transparent to get the effect I wanted.

The next thing I did was look into the logo design for my business card and the group in general. I used the tongue idea as I thought it was more playful and had a bit of an edge to it.

Here are a couple of mock up designs I had:

I wanted to incoporate my aspects of this design with Kitty and Dinas designs to create the website :

SELF BRANDING STUDIO BRIEF 2 CONCEPT

For this brief I worked in a group with Kitty and Dina. We decided to take a more playful approach to it and have fun with the brief. In the ideas stage of this when we were looking at each others personalities we played around with the idea of our personalities being represented by a type of dog. We looked individually at our likes, dislikes, favourite things, where we were from, passions, designs and what we wanted to do to get the full idea of each individual and how they wanted to be represented through this brief.

We wanted to brand ourselves as a group of fun and playful young female graphic designs who will do the best they can to help the clients. We all have our individual styles and way to go about graphic design so we thought the best thing to do for us was to make individual business cards and then make other aspects of our business that would tie us together as a whole to make the group a professional design company.

I then looked on Pinterest to see a wide variation of research I gathered to help me in my design process.
